Melbourne born
John McQualter has been a full time professional painter for the past
30 years. During that time he has evolved his style particular to
him, immediately recognizable wherever his paintings are seen.
This style, often called ‘romantic impressionism’ is in
the tradition of the 19th century French Impressionists but also a
different brand of impressionism which Streeton, McCubbin and the
Heidelberg School made so popular in this country. It is a style which
seems and looks to be ‘so easy’ to do, yet requires not
only a particular vision, a way of seeing, but also highly developed
technical skills with which to realize that vision. It is this skill
and vision which imparts to these paintings their arresting qualities,
that which keeps the eye returning again and again to the painting.
John McQualter was born in 1949 and spent his childhood in the coastal
towns of Portsea and Sorrento which has greatly influenced his work.
John studied Commerce at Melbourne University and attended evening
painting classes under Mary Harris where he learnt the mixing of colour
and application of paint. In 1973 John turned to painting professionally.
John continues to establish himself as an artist by winning numerous
awards. He is now represented widely in collections throughout Australia
and overseas, an example being paintings in the Sheraton Mirage Hotel
on the Gold Coast. John exhibits at Flinders and Sorrento Fine
Art Galleries on the Mornington Peninsula.
